Thio Basse, Ziguinchor

Joseph Louis Daniel Basse aka ‘Thio Basse’ was born on December 11, 1960 in Ziguinchor, in the green region of Casamance in southern Senegal (West Africa). Thio Basse started working at a very young age ‘when I was born I fell into the pot of art’.

Self-taught by nature, he was too quickly noticed in the artistic milieu of his country Senegal (selected at the 4th Senegalese National Salon of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Dakar, 1989). He won the grand prize for painting in the Ziguinchor region (1990). A committed artist, he was noticed for his charisma and his devotion to the cause of artists, he was named 'coordinator of plastic artists in the Ziguinchor region' and selected for the 1st Biennale of Arts in Dakar (Exhibition ‘Salon de l'Amitié’ at the National Gallery, 1992). A confirmed artist, he received the distinction of ‘Honorary Citizen’ from the town of Saint-Maur des Fossés in 1996 (France), on the occasion of an exhibition bringing together artists from all the towns twinned with the town of Saint-Maur des Fossés (France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Senegal).
